Students Push for Vote
In February 2009 the West Sacramento Youth Resource Coalition decided they wanted to take on a project that would affect systems to increase youth voice. This strategy would foster long term sustainability for youth leaders. In a planning retreat the Sactown Heroes and adult partners decided on a strategy that would bring youth to the table on many levels. The strategy was getting youth on local boards and commissions. As youth leaders the Sactown Heroes thought that with the city’s new Youth Commission there was growing desires to have youth participate in decision making processes.
Currently the Sactown Heroes have begun working diligently to get the Washington Unified School Districts Board of Education to grant voting rights to their student board member. As it stands the board will seek out and consider students' ideas and viewpoints, however the student is not counted in a final vote. This is the system we hope to change. It is our understanding that other districts have already adopted voting rights for their student board members which demonstrates a real commitment to youth.
