Sactown Heroes Gain Mayors Support in Youth Voices for Change Project
Over a 16 week period the Sactown Heroes began working with the UC Davis Center for Regional Change on a project called Reaching Forward: Youth Voices for Change. This project was a combination of focus groups, discussions, mapping activities, site visits in the community and production meetings. The purpose of these activities was to allow the youth to reflect their perceptions of their community.
Youth broke down their ideas into three categories featuring youth likes, dislikes and recommendations for change. These ideas were then reflected in video, image and audio format to use as tools in speaking to the community. As a result, the Sactown Heroes produced a Youth Voices map using the information they gathered, which is now an interactive online Google map. A link to the map is located on our website. On June 30th 2009, the West Sacramento Youth Resource Coalition and the Center for Regional Change hosted a Media Exhibit and Idea Exchange Event at City Hall. The Sactown Heroes lead media presentations navigating through their map and presenting their findings. This successful event brought together nearly 100 community partners, local media stations, newspaper, parents, local policy makers and a special appearance from our mayor Christopher Cabaldon. This project is a start to what we hope will influence social change for youth in West Sacramento. For more picture of this project visit our Photo Gallery.
